You know how much I love watching the hopeful movies that are shown on Hallmark movie channels.** Well, there is another series that I also really love. It is on the History channel and runs about ten episodes every year. The next season’s first episode of “The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch” is supposed to start June 3. I would be very disappointed if there was no new season!
The universe, planets and galaxies, distances from Earth to points of light, thinking that there are people – not of this earth – walking among us. These ideas fascinate me. And, “The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch” fulfills all of those imaginations for me.
Skinwalker? That is a Navajo term for some type of witch – a harmful witch with the capability to become another animal. A werewolf. A huge dog. A giant animal never before seen by humans. A Skinwalker is not a healer. Skinwalkers are evil with nothing good to be told about them. Skinwalkers are to be feared. Hence the name for the Ranch.
Through the eons of time, the Navajo peoples, as well as others who live around this Uintah basin in which the Ranch is located have told tale after tale about the very strange happenings all around and on this Ranch. Stories that were always discounted by non-Navajos as “just stories.” Non-residents who have visited the Ranch have also experienced happenings that are not to be believed by most people. Many have not been willing to talk about those happenings.
And, so, the Federal Government got involved in this area. You know with their investigation of UFOs and UAPs. Yes, there was a government (perhaps, still is) agency charged with figuring out whether or not these things really exist. The findings from the first research completed at the Ranch has been kept “under lock and key” for years and years. It still is not accessible to those who want to review the research.
But, now, there is another research project. Funded by a very wealthy Utah business man, this research has been going on for several years. They have applied careful research protocols to attempt to discover why the activities at the Ranch are so – frankly – weird! And, rather than take a bulldozer to discover the research, the approach by the research team is to go about the work using a scalpel approach. Bit by bit, the Ranch is showing pieces and parts of itself to the researchers.
Also, the government must still be interested, because Black Hawk helicopters without transponder identification often fly over the Ranch while the team is conducting experiments. The question is, why would the government’s helicopters fly over without having a transponder identification? Clearly, it has been turned off to avoid identification.
Sometimes, the researchers (all men) seem to me to be like little boys, incredibly excited about their work and experiments and sadly disappointed when the experiment isn’t successful. They always seem to look at the positive side, though, considering even an unsuccessful venture to be one that produces data.
As I said, although I really like Hallmark movies because I find them hopeful, even when the story line is one that I’ve seen time after time, I really enjoy “The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch.” It excites me to see the excitement of the researchers and see the scientific progress that is made. I’ve watched the research team progress from reluctant, resistant, unbelieving to accepting, wanting to learn more, enjoying working with each other, and arriving at some very provocative conclusions.
I, too, want to know what is “The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch.”

**I remember reading the book, The Day After Roswell, by Philip J. Corso and William J. Birnes. It told of the Roswell incident involving an extraterrestrial spacecraft. I remember one of my art mentors, Pomona, who told me that her father, meteorologist assigned at the time of the incident to Rosell, NM, told her that “It was not a weather balloon.” That tantalizing statement was all that he was ever able to say. If you are interested in this issue, The Day After Roswell is a good read.
